Paphos
The coastal city of Paphos is located on the south-western tip of island of Cyprus. Originally the city was divided into two parts Old Paphos and New Paphos but today the inhabited modern Paphos city in the New Paphos. Considered by many as one of the most beautiful, ancient towns on the island, Paphos was once the capital of Cyprus during Roman times and today the small harbour is still considered a popular tourist destination.
The history of this beautiful city dates back to the Neolithic period and it is thought that Paphos was actually the location where the Greek Goddess Aphrodite emerged from the sea. This gives the area a special historical feel and reminds visitors just how old it really is.
Today, the city of Paphos is gradually becoming a major tourist centre and has received financial help from the government and private sector investment so has been able to develop in a number of ways. The city has proper roads, dams have been built and money has been put in to aid the development of hotels, restaurants and villas all designed to pull in more visitors. The main attraction of the island is thought by most to be Kato Pafos, an area which holds all the hotels and luxury villas and is also in close proximity to the sea.
If you are looking for an area with rural architecture and beautiful views then Paphos is the ideal location. Most of the area has been untouched and undisturbed so still looks incredibly picturesque. Here you can explore a variety of astonishing gorges, beautiful coastlines that seem to stretch on forever and nature trails for all you outdoorsy people.
In the summer, Paphos enjoys a perfect Mediterranean climate which is ideal for sightseeing. The summers tend to be long and hot in comparison to the winters which are short but not too cold. Summer time in Paphos is classed as running between mid May to mid October but the region is blessed with a mostly dry climate that sees very little rain so any time of the year is perfect to visit the area. That being said, if you are chasing the sun them summer time is the best time to visit as the weather is very hot and dry with temperatures reaching up to 40°c. This may sound pretty hot but as the city is located along the coast line, the pleasant breezes make the heat bearable.
There is plenty to do in this ancient city and in recent years Paphos has developed a really lively nightlife. Take your pick from the numerous bars, cafes, club and pubs scattered throughout the area. There are also plenty places to eat including lots of popular tavernas, local cuisine restaurants, fast food outlets and other international cuisines as well.
Shopping in Paphos has also improved in the past decade, with many large supermarkets and shopping centres popping up all over the area. There are also many great local markets where you can find unique gifts and souvenirs to take away with you.
